Andalusia deploys 220,000 Ubuntu desktops in schools throughout the region
Isotrol and Canonical's Premium Service Engineer (PSE) support service delivered an improved learning experience to 600,000 students in Andalusia, Spain. The Andalusian Regional Government, Spain, wanted to improve access to IT in schools throughout the region. It asked IT services company infrastructure to connect 2,000 schools in Andalusia. Isotrol implemented 220,000 Ubuntu-based workstations in more than 2,000 schools throughout the region. Now, technology plays an integral role in delivering a more dynamic learning experience in schools across Andalusia. Teachers and students can share information quickly and easily, while each school receives dedicated support from a centralised support service.

Financial services company Equitec was running its mission-critical, proprietary trading software on 100 Windows-based servers. After experiencing a series of performance issues, the company decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. Now Equitec can run its entire workload on just 30 Ubuntu-based servers, which equates to a dramatic hardware, space and power saving of 70 per cent for the same performance. Additionally, Equitec has experienced significant reduction in systems management overheads, running its critical common workloads and its trading system with a minimum of fuss, outage or maintenance. The company is seeing a very real reduction in the total cost of ownership (TCO) of its IT infrastructure through switching its servers to Ubuntu.

As a result, it expects to reduce the number of physical servers it runs from 11 to four. With a standardised infrastructure in place, the IT team has dramatically simplified maintenance and disaster recovery processes, while making considerable cost savings.

After testing a range of server technologies, the company chose to introduce 15 servers based on Ubuntu Server Edition. As a result, it has reduced the time it takes to perform upgrades from days to 15 minutes. It can also deploy and set up new servers more quickly, and has greater confidence that it has a server infrastructure on which it can depend.

Metal Sales deploys mission-critical servers five times faster with Ubuntu
US-based Metal Sales Manufacturing needed to upgrade its server infrastructure so that it could accelerate processes, integrate new applications and scale to meet future requirements. The company needed to implement a cost-effective solution that could improve efficiencies across the organisation. Metal Sales chose to implement Ubuntu Server long-term support offering and seamless deployment. It found that it could deploy Ubuntu five times more quickly than alternative server platforms. With no superfluous applications and easy integration with existing hardware, Ubuntu is a reliable, high-performing platform on which Metal Sales can run its mission-critical activities.

The cost-effective Ubuntu Desktop Edition solution is free, easy to use and very popular with the students of Assam.
